ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION

Advocating for the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

Zambia Federation of Disability Organisations (ZAFOD)

is a legally constituted national umbrella organization for disability organizations in Zambia and has a long history of work in the legal reform and human rights sector.

With a membership of 12 organisations, the primary goal of the organisation is to advocate for the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

It has a vision of a society where persons with disabilities enjoy equal rights and opportunities that are generally available in society and are necessary for the fundamental elements of living and development such as education, employment, health, housing, financial and personal security.

ZAFOD would also like to see the enhancement of family life, participation in social and political groups, religious activity, sports, access to public facilities, and freedom of movement.

Current members of ZAFOD in Zambia:

ZAFOD has played an instrumental role in policy and legal framework formulation on disability issues in Zambia.

Examples of this instrumental role can be seen in the successful advocacy for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Persons With Disabilities Act (2012) and the Zambia National Disability Policy; Highlighting issues of self-representation by persons with disabilities in the most recent constitution review process; and Mobilising members for input in the formulation of the Finance Ministry’s development plans.

Furthermore, ZAFOD has over the years developed a body of casework related to disability – with over 500 legal cases dealt with successfully, and further secured major legal precedents through targeted litigation programmes in the areas of accessible elections and physical access.

ZAFOD has also successfully lobbied for the repeal of the Mental Disorders Act (1951) and drafting of the current Mental Health Bill.

The organisation also facilitated the establishment of the first Independent Monitoring Unit to monitor domestication of the CRPD in Zambia – also the first in Africa.

As a federation ZAFOD also supports a variety of major national development programmes across education, economic development (micro-finance and agri-business development) and human rights fields.
